Overview
Nyerere National Park was carved in 2019 out of the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve, and at around 30,000 square kilometres it is one of the largest national parks in Africa - bigger than Belgium, and larger than the Serengeti and Ngorongoro combined. The Rufiji river is its spine, spreading into a system of lakes, sandbanks and channels that gives the park its defining feature: this is one of very few places in East Africa where you can do a proper boat safari, drifting past hippo pods, crocodiles and elephants that come down to drink. Game densities are lower than in the north but the animals are less habituated and the vehicles are far fewer, so a sighting is often yours alone. Elephant, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, lion and a strong population of African wild dog are all here. Walking safaris with an armed guide are permitted, which the northern parks largely do not allow, and fly-camping under canvas is part of the appeal.
